Newspapers are screaming over the suppression order on the trial of Cardinal George Pell. Their upholding of the people’s “right to know” in important matters of public interest is inspiring. Therefore, I look forward to their vehement demands for transparency in the matter of “Witness K” and Bernard Collaery.
Every Australian has the right to know the details of the Australian espionage against Timor- Leste. We have the right to know about the roles played by past and present Australian politicians in that grubby confidence trick played on a friendly neighbour.
Can we be confident that the Sydney Morning Herald, the Herald Sun, The Australian, The Daily Telegraph etc. will be vociferous about any decision that the Collaery and K trial be held in secret? Will they dedicate front page space to any attempt by government to invoke “national security” to cover its greed and duplicity?
